About Osteopathy
9th September 2010
Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to dealing with painful conditions.

There are many different techniques that can be used and every Osteopath has their own way of treating.
There are techniques that can be used to specifically treat all parts of the body whether it be muscle, ligament, bones and joints, or less obvious areas such as the internal organs, nerves, fascia, membranes etc.

The list of conditions that can be helped is endless but it must be remembered that Osteopathy is not a magic bullet and there are a few patients who fail to respond for whatever reason.

The main complaints treated are lower back pain and neck pain, with or without trapped nerves. Arthritic conditions, shoulder pain and headaches are also regularly treated, as are whiplash injuries.

Babies often benefit from Osteopathic treatment if suffering from birth trauma which can produce symptoms of colic, restlessness, irritability, or problems suckling or sleeping.

For vomiting, reflux or inability to gain weight, check first that the baby is not lactose intolerent.

Older children are treated for conditions such as 'Glue Ear', sleeplessness and bed wetting.
Dyslexia and learning difficulties, if related to birth trauma, may also be treated.

All patients respond differently to treatment,as this depends on such factors as the health of the patient and the complexity of the complaint, but most respond within 3 to 6 treatments. For some of the more complex or longstanding conditions patients may be advised to attend for regular treatment every one or two months.
